Elite Racing / 2021 National Junior Team - Training Camp Adelaide
« on: April 28, 2021, 12:31:22 AM »
2021 National Junior Team
A couple of decades ago the Bathurst Cycling Club was regularly getting young club members in the Australian Junior Teams. However for over a decade now young Bathurst riders have been in the mix but no national Junior Team jerseys since about 2009. However this year local track cyclists Kalinda Robinson and Tyler Puzicha have been both named in the Australian Junior Cycling Team.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and current international travel restrictions, the AusCycling determined early in the year that no National Australian Cycling Team would compete at the 2021 UCI U19 Junior Track World Championships scheduled for Egypt in April.

Instead the Director of Performance Pathway for the Australian Cycling Team Jesse Korf said a week-long camp at the Adelaide Super-drome would be provided as a replacement for the Egypt trip to ensure the ongoing development of Australia's best junior athletes.

In an amazing achievement for the Western Division of NSW five cyclists have been selected for the team, with the powerful Dubbo Club providing an amazing four athletes Danny Barber Dylan Eather Haylee Fuller and Tyler Puzicha.
While Kalinda Robinson became the first Bathurst Cycling club member selected in the team for over a Decade.

NSWCycling.com News caught up with Kalinda for a run down on the camp.

Road Race Report / 2021 "Private Isaac E Maher" Anzac Trophy Race
« on: April 24, 2021, 08:31:15 PM »
2021 "Private Isaac E Maher" Anzac Trophy Race
The 2021 Anzac Trophy Race was held in honour of Bathurst Club Member Private Isaac E Maher of the 54th Battalion who died on the Great War's Western Front in June 1917. The weekends event started with a presentation on Private Isaac E Maher who enlisted after the Cooee March came through the village of Evans Plains. All then paused for a minute silence for Private Maher (and all the other club members involved in WW1).

This year’s 2021 Isaac Maher Anzac Memorial Race won by Michael Robinson from the 13min mark. Robinson actually won the Anzac Days sister race on Remembrance Day back in 2013 and has always been very respectful of the Cycling Clubs history at the World Wars. Robinson had worked well with 13minute co markers Kevin Bell and Claire Scott to catch the front marker before making his winning move 2kms from the finish.

Robinson defeated 2016 winner Scott Allen off 20min and Kevin Bell from 13minutes handicap, with 16 minute riders Peter Hickey and David Hyland rounding out the top five in front of Peter Tutty (20min).

First female finisher was Lara Allen (20min) in 7th overall, while second in the female category was Donna Scott (11min) followed in by Rosemary Hastings (20min), Charlotte Lovett (11min) and Jille Harris (11min).

1995 Anzac Trophy winner Rob Stephen (6min) showed he still a contender in the annual event, finishing 8th overall in front of co marker Damien Bennett with Gary Thiess rounding out the top 10.

The race for fastest time was a dramatic affair with lone scratch marker Craig Hutton set a very tough task of chasing a strong Block Bunch (which include Dubbo female national champ Simon Grounds) off 1min15sec start by himself. It was a tight contest for the first half of the race, however then when Barrett, Windsor, Cannon and Lovett caught the 2minute bunch which included former club champions Steve Bennett and Brad Rayner the odds were stacked against Hutton and young Cadel Lovett would go on to claimed the Fastest Time honours ahead of Mark Windsor with Jack Cannon third fastest in front of Nick Barrett.

Round 4 of the 2021 Renshaw’s Pedal Project Road Series -  Hurt on Dirt Classic

Raced on the tough Guestinthorpe Loop, the Hurt on Dirt Classic is regarded as one of the more prestigious cycling events on the local Bathurst Cycling Calendar. It’s a tough course which includes a number of dirt sections resulting in some great cycling action.

First held in 2011 the A Grade event has an impressive honour roll with Craig Hutton the leading rider in the record books going into this year’s event with 3 wins ahead of both Dean and Blair Windsor with 2 wins each.

The pace was on in B Grade with the front trio of Steve Bennett, Ray Thorn and David Reece lapping as quick as the top grade late in the race. Reece launched an attack late in the race only to have both Bennett and Thorn catch and past him on the dirt section with Bennett taking the win. Will Lesh and Tony Shaw chased the trio home to finish in 4th and 5th placings.

Blue Mountains rider Phillip Stapleton was an impressive winner of C Grade with Damien Bennett and Rod Esdaile finishing in the major placings. Next was Robert Stephen, Wayne Powell, Darren Fenton and Cam Crump with Charlotte Lovett 8th in the grade and the top placed female rider on the day. Rounding out the top 10 was Michael Robinson and Peter McKinnon ahead of Ebony Robinson who was the second best female rider on the day.

Road Race Report / Bcc Easter Handicap - 40km

Bcc Easter 40km 3Roads Handicap - Sunday, April 4, 2021
Bathurst cycling club held its Easter Handicap on the weekend over a 40km course that included the tough Quarry Hill climb at the half way point. A very motivated Rosemary Hastings was the early leader setting a solid pace from the start. She was chased by the 26min markers with both David Hyland and Cathy Adams working smoothly in the early stages making Gary Theiss (22min) task to catch the pair very difficult.
Middle Markers Darren Fenton and Aleks Krajer (off 11min) had the experience of Rob Stephen and Glen Carter in their bunch and where making ground on the leaders however the 8:30 group of Tim Roebuck, Geoff Short, Brad Rayner and top female cyclist Ella Falzarano (of the Giant Racing Team) had started fast and had them in their sights.
The backmarkers where handicapped into 4 groups lead by Ray Thorn, David Reece, Tony Shaw and promising young Orange rider Josiah Cooke off 4:30; with the 3minute group of Nic Barrett, Alexander Onus and Mark Windsor starting fast to catch them as soon as possible. Top class age grouper Jeremy Ryan had them insights from the start off 2min while course record holder Will Hodges looked to have a very tough assignment form the scratch mark.
Having won more NSW State Road Rider of the Year category awards that any other rider in Bathurst History Rosemary Hastings was proving very difficult to catch and still held a big lead at the top of quarry hill. David Hyland had broken clear of Adams on the climb and now separated the pair where battling to catch Hastings.
At the back of the field local champion Will Hodges have been held up and lost any chance of figuring in the finish however Jeremy Ryan had  caught Windsor and Barrett who had also caught the 4:30 minute bunch and they were finishing very fast.
But it was the hard riding Rosemary Hastings that held on for a great victory with David Hyland taking second. Heart Break for Cathy Adams caught by the backmarkers less than 100m from the finish with Jeremy Ryan, Mark Windsor and Ella Falzarano sprinting home to round out the top 5; Dave Reece rubbing salt into the wounds catching Adams right on the finish line to take 6th place.
Former club champion Bradley Rayner, Josiah Cooke and Nic Barrett rounding out the top 10 ahead of Glen Carter Darren Fenton, Rob Stephen Tim Roebuck and Tony Shaw.
Fastest Time in the race was set by Jeremy Ryan (58min 30sec) ahead of Mark Windsor and Nic Barrett, while fastest female was the very speedy Ella Falzarano (1:05:01) from Cathy Adams and race winner Rosemary Hastings.

David Reece attacked on the hills each lap and looked set to win B Grade when he and National level cyclist Ella Falzarano broke clear on the final lap. However the Peloton caught them in the closing stages and it was former A Grade champ Steve Bennett that counter attacked and got clear for an impressive win. Ella Falzarano was the top female rider on the day finishing second in front of Steven Scott and Ray Thorn, with David Reece an unlucky 5th ahead of Tony Shaw. Another former A Grade champ Bradley Rayner was the next to finish in front of Rod Esdaile and Scott James.

Calling for Assistance to compile statistics on Off-Road Cycling Paths usage in Bathurst:

The first of the RMS Western Region Bicycle Forums took place around 2009. One of the Session that happen annually at this forum was the discussion on stats and figures on Cycling Accidents and other cycling matters in the region. Josh Parkin (Leader Network Optimisation Planning) has often lead this discussion and it spurred me into attempt to keep my own local figures, specific to the Bathurst region.

Some of the details I tried to monitor have been local cycling accidents, local cycling event participation, numbers of riders on local bike paths, numbers of commuters riding to work/study.

A talk by RMS Head Office’s Brad Donaldson (Sustainable Transport), in 2013 further highlighted the importance of these figures as he explained the RMS had battled to get specific figures on safety and participation, as general bicycle movements across recreation commuter competition.. etc had been difficult to compile.

This was the case with my own figures with the methods a bit haphazard - The accident figures where simply compiled from keeping my eyes open while been active in the cycling community. The Cycling Commuter levels simply evaluated from counting the number of bikes parked at a number of locations around the city. Path usage by simply counting the numbers on the path when going for a jog. These numbers where simply added to a spread sheet on my computer which sadly didn’t connect too any extra auxiliary day on locations and conditions.

However a talk by Steve Martin at the forum on measuring cycling activity on Strava Heat maps suggested that simply adding the figures to a Strava recording as a note will add metadata for location, time, conditions… etc for my records and therefore making the stats more worthwhile. In fact now I am keen to open up this data capture to others to widen the monitoring of cycling activity in the region. You just need to have a Strava login, a Smartphone and a bit of time to go for a walk or ride on one of our bike paths.

Method:
Simply record your journey on the Strava App. and then add the numbers of other users you counted on a section of bike path in the comments field (Tip-I change the sport to Hike to be able to select out all the activities with comments). Now I generally count and record the number of people while on the path for around 12min while running in one direction. However worth remembering the data will be presented as the number of users on a section of Path at that point in time, which means that you are moving while counting and counting users travelling in both directions, so ensure you do not count users twice or waiting to long to record path users as it is supposed to be a snapshot. You can count while stationary but more on that later.

Evaluating the Data.
I like to have a minimum of 5 recording in a set period eg Christmas Holidays.
Now there are 2 methods currently being investigated:-
No1 - Divide the number recorded into the distance travelled in Kilometres to get users per kilometre..
However I prefer No2 -- Identify a section of path (eg Knowles Path approx 1.4km) and record the numbers on that piece of path.

What do you count?
At a minimum I count total users and divide them into Pedestrians and Cyclists. I also like to divide cyclists into Adults and Kids (mainly to indicate Recreational vs Training). I also have started identifying if Adults are carrying a bag or panniers and even types of bike but there is only so much you can remember.

What to do with the Data:
Please send any data or inquires to CycleSafeBathurst – you can simply email to cyclesafebathurst@gmail.com
Hoping to hear from you - Mark Windsor (Vice President CycleSafeBathurst).

Road Race Report / 2021 Bathurst Cycling Classic - B2B Weekend
« on: March 13, 2021, 11:15:20 PM »
King & Queen of the Mountain:
DAY1 - The Renshaw Pedal Project Hill Climb - Mt Panorama:

Sam Hill has settled all debate on who is the Cycling King of Mt Panorama with a blistering climb up the mountain in the 2021 Renshaw Pedal Project Hill Climb on Friday (12/03/2021). Hill stopped the clock at an eye watering 6min 45.07sec to defeat his brother and defending NSW Hill Climb champ Ben Hill who also broke the 7 minute barrier on the course starting at the Mt Panorama finish line to the middle of Brock Skyline.

For around One and Half decades the Mt Panorama back roads have been used for the CNSW Champs however in 2021 the weekends hill climb was moved onto the motor racing circuit to a course used by the local cycling club and cycling promotor Martin Whitely as far back as the 1970s.

In recent times local cycling professionals have swapped fastest times up the famous motor circuit on the GPS monitoring app Strava with Tour de France star Mark Renshaw recording six & half minutes up the climb in 2013 in front of a group of spectators to set what was believed to be the fast climb up the Mountain. This segment is shorter than the weekend’s event, so a quick check of Strava confirms that Sam & Ben along with a number of the other riders in the top 10 have all bettered Renshaw’s Strava time.

But of course these Strava Time are unofficial records at best; for a record to be official it should be recorded in a race or championship; and by an independent timing authority.

Many of the local climbing records where on much shorter courses however in 1986 the Mt Panorama 600 promotor Martin Whiteley contacted NSW cycling federation to hold the 1986 Hill Climb Championship on the famous motor circuit as a warm up to his Mt Panorama 600 cycle race. The Hill climb was won by English Professional Denis Lightfoot who broke 7 minutes (6m 51.67) up the mountain in what was considered the fastest official climb up Mt Panorama. Sam Hill’s 6min 45.07sec on a longer course clearly now the fastest cyclist to ride up Mt Panorama.

So what of the Female Record? Although Olympic gold medallist Kathy Watt road the Martin Whiteley event and it credited with the lap record there was no female times for any female to the top of the mountain from a standing start. Obviously then Emily Watts 8:26.21 set in the Renshaw Pedal Project is fastest time officially recorded up Mt Panorama by a female.

So Sam Hill and Emily Watts are the true King and Queen of Mountain on the Mt Panorama motor racing circuit, and possible the King and Queen of the Mountain overall, as their times are obviously faster than the other record times on the other courses used in the past..

Why the Bathurst Cycling Classic B2B weekend is the best of its kind:
But competitor numbers intentionally down in 2021:

Only around 700 competitors for the Bathurst Cycling Classic in 2021, which is less than half the numbers of previous years. However this reduction in numbers was an intentional move by the organisers, who had to account for the Covid19 Pandemic in pre-race planning.

The popular short course event was dropped for 2021 in an effort to ensure social distancing, while the Tour format which will be used in 2021 can only cater for much smaller numbers due to the field having to split into seeded divisions of around 50 competitor maximum to hold the Criterium stage which is to be held in the Mt Panorama pit complex on the Saturday.

On top of that the dropping of the State Champion titles for the Hill Climb and the event dropping off the World Series also shows the scaling back of the event in 2021.

Of course the big question is - Will organisers be able to return the event to its original size after the Pandemic?

The weekend was the first of its kind run by Cycling Australia and initial predictions where that it would grow to a Gran Fondo of around 10,000 people. One thing that prediction didn’t take into account was the flood of opposition events that would develop in the Gran Fondo category concept.

Amy’s Ride in Victoria was given first crack at the World Series classification although starting after the Bathurst Cycling Classic B2B (/O2B) Challenge. Then the new Brisbane Grand Fondo even pushed the Bathurst event off its preferred date. Since then, new events are springing up everywhere.... all looking to take the premier cycling mass participation reputation away from the Bathurst Cycling Classic B2B weekend.

Sadly few people realise that the Bathurst Cycling B2B Classic is the granddaddy of the UCI Gran Fondos & Cyclo Sportifs in Australia.. and it’s the history is what makes the Bathurst event the number one participation cycling event in Australia. Competitors & Organisers need to be reminded they are not only riding and working on Cycling Australia’s oldest participation event, but it is using the country’s most historic cycling roads; with the course using roads that have been used for cycling events since the 1880s. It is truely unique that the Vale Road first hosted Road Cycling Events in the 1880s and the Bathurst Cycling Classic still uses it today...
