Rockley Loop Handicap – 16th June 2019
Bathurst Cycling Club hosted a handicap event on its renowned Mt Rockley Loop Course on the weekend, and if that wasn’t hard enough, the cold wet conditions rolled in during the event to make it a real test for the toughest.
One of the club’s former A Grade champions Steve Bennett made one of his rare appearances at the event and out sprinted Kalinda Robinson (10min) and 6minute bunch co marker Jack Cannon to take the win as the rain set-in.
It was quite fitting that Steve should win in the rain, as in 2014 he won his second Bathurst A Grade Championship in what was regarded as maybe the worst conditions ever faced by competitors in the history of the club when a blizzard hit during the race.
Blackheath visitor Warwick Larkin (6min) and young gun Cadel Lovett (10min) rounding out the top 5 on handicap while scratch marker Brad Rayner recorded 1:09:43 to defeat Dan Googe and Mark Windsor for fastest time in the event. Fastest female rider was Kalinda Robinson (1:16:52) from Toireasa Gallagher and Jette McKellar

Rockley Loop All-in Handicap: - How It Happened:

David Hyland and Bathurst D Grade Champion Jette McKellar were the early leaders but on Rockley Mount a large group consisting of Peter Wilson, David McKellar, Chris Davis, Rob Stephen, Nev Knahe and Toireasa Gallagher where chasing fast.

Behind them hard riding Rod Esdaile was getting the 10min bunch organised which included a number of potential race winners, such as Kalinda Robinson Brian Draper Cadel Lovett and Bathurst C Grade Champ Braedon Smith. However it was pre-race favourites, the 6minute bunch that was quickly moving through the field, with Warwick Larkin (Blackheath) Drew Tuckwell (Orange) Jack Cannon and Graham Peadon (Dubbo) pushing the pace on the climb with B Grade Champion David Reece, Steve Bennett and Tony Shaw also in the group.

At the back of the field there was a really battle taking place with Club Champ Brad Rayner having to give Luke Tuckwell, Mark Windsor and Dan Googe 30 second start, with the trio charging off the mark and putting the scratch marker under plenty of pressure. The hill complicated things with all 4 riders separating which allowed Rayner back into contention.

As expected by the Newbridge turn the powerful 6 minute bunch had caught all the field and with the back markers still more than 2 minutes behind had the race in their keeping.

However there was still a twist still to come with juniors Kalinda Robinson and Cadel Lovett getting on the 6 minute bunch as they charged to the lead and both had the speed to out sprint the older riders in the dash to the line. In fact Kalinda is a junior national ranked sprinter so it came as no surprise that it was Kalinda and Steve Bennett would battle it out for the win with Bennett taking victory from Robinson with Jack Cannon third in front of Warwick Larkin and young Cadel Lovett. Next was Rob Stephan from world masters medallist Graham Peadon and David Reece, followed Drew Tuckwell and Brian Draper rounding out the top 10. With Braedon Smith, Rod Esdaile, Toireasa Gallagher, Peter Wilson and Chris Davis the top 15.

The race for fastest time had become a time trial between the 4 backmarkers as they all chased each other after splitting up on Rockley Mount. Brad Rayner setting a new course record stopping the clock at 1:09:43 to defeat Dan Googe and Mark Windsor in the race for overall fastest. Kalinda Robinson recording 1:16:52 to set the fastest female time ahead of Toireasa Gallagher and Jette McKellar
