2020 Remember Them Trophy
The Bathurst Cycling Club held its annual “Remember Them” trophy race on the weekend ahead of Remembrance Day on Wednesday (11th Nov 2020). The event is run in memory of 5 former Bathurst Cycling Club members that lost their lives in World War 2, with the names of Robert Dale, Jack Sandry, Kenneth Adlem, Ron Harper and Ivor Ezzy acknowledged on the trophy.

The race uses a Handicap format which allows riders of all abilities a chance of winning the trophy, with the inaugural race in 1946 attracting a record field for the time. The 1946 event won by Bathurst cycling club life member and Advocate reporter Jack McKay defeating Hadson and Nancarrow.

Traditionally the race has been dominated by the frontmarkers keen to get their hands on the trophy, so the 2020 field started fast. It was Rosemary Hastings that led the event early from Charlotte Lovett and then Aleks Krajcer and Jette McKellar working hard to catch the leaders. But 2014 winner David McKellar was part of the fast moving 12minite bunch (which also included Peter Wilson Nev Krahe & Ebony Robinson) which looked a major threat to the leaders at the halfway point.

However in the second half of the race the wind caused havoc with the leaders and the strong backmarker groups rode through the field. Scratchmarker Jeremy Ryan had joined the Jack Cannon Jack Reen and Mark Windsor group and they were quickly riding through the field.

However at the final turn Dave McKellar still lead the race and was putting in a super performance to hold off the chasing bunch of Jeremy Ryan, Mark Windsor, Jack Cannon, Daniel Googe, Nic Barrett, Tony Shaw and Steve Bennett.

However things then took a dramatic change in the head wind, with Jeremy Ryan and Mark Windsor breaking clear, catching and passing McKellar, and then Ryan defeating Windsor in the dash to the line. The unlucky Dave McKellar hung on for third in front of Jack Cannon and Daniel Googe. Tony Shaw again raced well defeating Nic Barrett and Phillip Stapleton for 6th place while Peter Wilson and Steve Bennett rounded out the top 10 in the 2020 Remember Them Race in front of Aleks Krajcer, Nev Krahe, Robert Stephen and Jette McKellar who was top placed female infront of Rosemary Hastings and Ebony Robinson.

Jeremy Ryan (Cowra) recorded fastest time in the event from Mark Windsor, stopping the clock 58min 36sec for the 40km Trophy race. While Robyn Partridge defeated Tracey Robinson in the support enticer race held on the day.
