13th Tour of California
« on: May 11, 2018, 11:33:47 AM »
Important test for Bathurst Champion:
After a very difficult start to the 2018 season which has included surgery, Bathurstís Mark Renshaw will attempt to bring his season back on track at the Tour of California which start Sunday in Santa Barbara.

Renshaw had not finished a race since Februaryís Abu Dhabi Tour due to a run of illness, but after improving his fitness in the recent Yorkshire Tour, he is hoping his health has improved enough to contest the Tour of California to then focus on another Tour de France start in July.

Although it will be Renshaw 8th appearance at Americas Biggest Cycling event -- the 2018 will be a very difficult assignment, not only will he be battling a health issue but also working for an aging Dimension Data Team Captain, Mark Cavendish who is trying to recover himself from a run of falls while racing against a growing list of sprint challengers

2018 Tour of California consists of 7 stages starting with a 12 lap circuit race in Los Angeles which is expected to be a bunch sprint for the super sprinters that had all made the trip to America for the 2018 Tour.

Mark Renshaw and the Dimension Data sprint train will be very keen to set Mark Cavendish for his 11 stage win at California however the challengers include world champion Peter Sagan (Bora-Hansgrohe) will be looking to aim to his amazing 16 stage wins at Tour of California. Marcel Kittel (Katusha-Alpecin) will be very motivated to win against his old Quick-Step Floors Teams young gun Gaviria, while Caleb Ewan (Mitchelton-Scott) and Alexander Kristoff (UAE Team Emirates) will also be vying for stage win.

Stage2 and 3 will be for the climbers while stage 4 is a Individual Time Trial. However the sprinters will be back on show in Stages 5 and 7 which are split by plenty of climbing in stage 6.

Good Day 1 for Dimension Data:
Nice the see the Dimension Data back in the Mix in stage 1 of the 2018 Tour of California. Mark Renshaw on the front of the bunch inside the final Kilometre and Cav involved in the sprint although sit up and coasting to the line.
Worth noting, that Cavs top 10 finish and intermediate sprint placing put him in the top 10 overall and the top 12 in the Points Classification.
Good first day for Dimension Data, certainly something for the Renshaw supporters back at home, well done Mark.

Also should say that Fernando Gaviria looked super fast in that sprint -
RESULTS STAGE 1
1 Fernando Gaviria (Quick-Step)
2 Caleb Ewan (Mitchelton-Scott)
3 Peter Sagan (Bora-Hansgrohe)
4 Marcel Kittel (Katusha-Alpecin)
5 Alexander Kristoff (UAE Team Emirates)
10 Mark Cavendish (Dimension Data)
116 Mark Renshaw at 57sec
