« on: November 04, 2017, 09:28:31 AM »
Kirsten back with Maaslandster Veris CNN:

Kirsten Howard will be heading back to the continental women’s road racing circuit this week after an impressive ride in the 42nd John Butler Memorial race at Bathurst on the weekend. Howard top 10 finish in the Butler race is the best performance by a female rider in the long running event but it was her confidence to attack the chase group behind the 2 race leaders (Hutton Austin) in a bold bid to take 3rd place particularly impressed local cycling enthusiasts.

Howard will again travel back overseas with the Maaslandster Veris team, this time to race the Tour of Zhoushan Island in China. The 3 stage tour will be a tough assignment as the elite worlds World Tour moved to China this month for the Tour of Chongming Island and as a consequence many of the world’s biggest female teams will be racing the Tour of Zhoushan Island against Kirsten’s Maaslandster Veris CNN outfit.

Astana, Veloconcept, BTC City Ljubljana and Hitec all performed well in the Chongming Island World Tour race with riders such as Christina Siggaard (Team Veloconcept), Arianna Fidanza (Astana Womens Team), Jelena Erić (BTC City Ljubljana), Emilie Moberg (Hitec Products) all placing in the top10 in stages at Chongming Island; while BTC’s Anna Stricker finished on the podium in stage 2 of Chongming Island World tour event.

The Hitec team has 2 former Tour of Zhoushan Island winners on their roster with Emilie Moberg (2012) and Charlotte Becker, who was the overall winner in 2014; while Italian world tour team BePink Cogeas has Russian champ Olga Zabelinskaya in its team roster who recently finished Top 10 in Liege Bastogne Liege behind Anna van der Breggen.

The tour starts on the 10th of May and consists of 3 stages (ending the 12th May 2017)

Race Details
The Tour is actually on the Island of Shengnsi which is off the many islands off the coast of Shanghai, some of these island have gained recent notoriety for the way vines have over grown and old fishing village to create an eye catching green ghost town, however Shengnsi is generally renowned as the closest island beach to Shanghai.
The Tour of Zhoushan Island consists of 3 stages which are all laps of the beach areas of the Shengnsi Island, which means beside the many small hills to climb there will be winds to contend with. Stage 2 looks the toughest stage with 8 solid climbs however both stages 1 and 3 have many smaller climbs on their undulating course and also look like hard days.

Hitec take stage 1:

Kirsten Howard has finished 32nd in Stage 1 of the Tour of Zhoushan, she was part of a 44rider bunch that contested the sprint which was won by 2012 race winner Emilie Moberg of Hitec with BePink Cogeas rider Ilaria Sanguineti second and Mia Radotic of BTC City Ljubljana third.

With World tour teams Hitec, BePink Cogeas, BTC City Ljubljana, Astana, Veloconcept and Servetto Giusta all with riders in the top10 after stage 1 the tour is delicately poised. Tomorrow is certain to be a tactical battle with riders attacking to give their team control of the tour in stage 2.

Given Howard and 4 of her Maaslandster Veris team mates (Amanda Jamieson, Desiree Ehrler and Sari Saarelainen) all finished in the front group in stage 1, they with start tomorrow with the distinct advantage that the world tour team will be racing each other. Meaning Maaslandster are likely to get over looked if they can get numbers of the front of the race in the early attacks.

Stage 2 looks tough, but looks a great opportunity for Kirsten and her Maaslandster Veris teams to feature in the race with little responsibility to contribute.
